COLORADO SPRINGS - Police say two intoxicated men crashed their car into a power pole around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, then tried to run away. It happened on Cheyenne Road just west of the 8th Street intersection.
Police say it first appeared one man had a critical head injury, but that apparently was not the case. Both were taken by ambulance to a hospital, treated and released. Police say the driver, Matthew Barros, was speeding at the time of the accident. Barros was cited for DUI, careless driving, no insurance and no driver's license.
Police say the men stumbled down a driveway and tried to climb a fence into a family's backyard before being caught. "And I had my sliding glass door unlocked at the time," said the homeowner.
The car knocked the power pole off its base, but wires held the pole up. Power was not immediately cut off, but Colorado Springs Utilities replaced the pole. Power to several homes was turned off for much of the day until the new pole was installed.
